Because of that one course of action by Molly, all the departments involved in my healthcare seemed to be listening to me.
I was a patient on the 5th floor cardiac ICU ward for a whole week. First, let me say Molly’s smile, playful character, and willingness to interact with the patient on a more human level than a robotic caregiver is a godsend to any veteran who needs ICU ward services. Molly is one of two people working in that ward who helped me find my way back into the light after 17 years of darkness. Molly is also one of two people who, ever since I was told I needed a triple bypass surgery, made me believe that getting the surgery was a good thing for me. Molly gave me hope that there may very well be better days in my future.
Molly changed the way I think about the VA healthcare system. She did something incredible. When she expressed concern for my blood sugar levels, Molly listened to me. She understood what I was trying to say. Within a few hours of that talk with Molly she had someone from whoever decides my meals in my room talking and listening to me. My meal plan changed, my blood sugar levels came down, and I was doing better, period. Because of that one course of action by Molly, all the departments involved in my healthcare seemed to be listening to me. There is hope for better health care for me in the VA system. Molly did more than just give me medications and monitor my vitals. She made me smile and feel happy. She treated me as if I had value and was more than just a warm body she was responsible for. She is truly irreplaceable.
To the HR department, I say this: when you hired Molly, you did more than hit a home run. You hit the World Series final game and walk off the Grand Slam.
To Molly, I say this: Thank you. Without your smile, playful character, and willingness to do things without ever being asked, such as closing the drapes so I could see the TV better and playing along with the watcher beware program, my attitude would not have gotten better, and my recovery time would have been longer. I hope you always keep that smile on your face and that playfulness in your heart. The world is a better place with you in it.
