Emily comes to work every day with a smile and an eagerness to help others. This includes not only patients, but team members within and outside of the Emergency Department. Her commitment to our patients and to the inclusivity of team members is inspiring. Emily is a trained SANE and consistently goes above and beyond for these most vulnerable and fragile patients. Emily has come in to perform exams and care needed on days/nights that she is not scheduled nor on-call. Recently, that was the case. A mother brought her child in with a suspicion of sexual abuse by another family member. There was not a pediatric SANE available that day and the patient was going to have to return the following day to have the SANE exam performed when one would be available. Not one of us could imagine the anxiety and fear that this situation created for this mother and child, and then to have to go home with no answers and wait. Emily could have simply informed that she was not on duty or on-call, but her compassion would not permit that. She let the team know that she needed to put her children to bed and arrange for her parents to come stay with them and then would be in to care for this patient. Emily cared for this patient and assisted in connecting this mother with the resources needed for further investigation and action. This is just one of others that Emily has cared for outside of her scheduled work and on-call hours. Her passion and compassion in ensuring these patients are cared for timely and respectfully goes above and beyond.
