Matthew Davey provided outstanding and empathetic care to myself and other patients in the ‘Fast Track’ area of the Department on what appeared to be a very busy evening. Matthew was the second nurse that had been assigned to myself and others in this area and his care and dedication was extraordinary.

Upon arriving at Fast Track, Matthew was providing care to a young male who was to be transferred to the Paeds Ward in preparation for upcoming surgery.  It was evident that the father of the child was anxious, tired and overwhelmed by the day's events. Matthew seemed like he had all the time in the world to ease the father’s concerns whilst also lightening the mood with appropriate humor; despite carrying what seemed to be a demanding patient load. The father thanked Matthew repeatedly for his outstanding care and thoroughness. Matthew had asked a colleague walking by if she was able to transfer the patient to Paeds as the Attendants were delayed, however she responded that she was too busy. The father said it was fine as Matthew was clearly busy however he took it upon himself to arrange an alternate transfer in a timely and stress-free manner. 

In regards to my patient care, Matthew demonstrated empathetic and nurturing care to myself when I was experiencing physical pain as well as being highly stressed and agitated. Matthew took the time to talk me through what was happening in relation to my care and the proposed plan forward when I wasn’t able to comprehend what the doctor had advised. Due to my highly anxious state, Matthew delayed taking his scheduled break to accompany me to my CT scan and ensure I was supported when I returned to my designated bed. He provided warm blankets without being asked and ensured I always had water and ice. He was mindful of keeping the area dark and quiet to allow me much needed sleep. He really talked me off a ledge that evening and I will be eternally grateful to him.

Another patient in Fast Track was a highly agitated oncology patient who, from my observation, was rude and aggressive towards all of the staff she encountered in the Department. She appeared to be very needy (by way of buzzing and calling out frequently) and questioned all of her care and decision making she received whilst I was next to her. Matthew remained very calm, considerate, polite and professional towards her throughout his shift, despite clearly being very busy with his patient load and other nursing staff requiring his help. His patience and level of care to someone so obnoxious was outstanding. 

I hope this summation has detailed sufficiently the outstanding care provided by Matthew to myself and others during his night shift. I could not think of a more deserving recipient of recognition.
