Stephen Callery is the Clinical Resource Nurse of the ICU who often works at the bedside directly taking care of patients. We had a patient who was admitted to our unit with respiratory failure complicated by many issues compromising his chances of survival significantly. This patient did not have any family or friends that could speak for him about making medical decisions that would best be in his interest. Steve went above and beyond to advocate for this patient initiating and following up with the complicated and lengthy process of this patient getting legal guardianship that could make decisions and not delay the plan of care that was best for this patient who was suffering. Steve was such an advocate that he volunteered to attend the court hearing to be the voice of reason and speak to what this patient was going through. Steve's compassion shown so brightly in this case. I am very lucky to work alongside him.
