JoAnn has embraced other departments in improving quality outcomes through evident based research.
JoAnn joined our Centrastate critical care team as a Nurse Manager in June 2021. Her professional experience as a clinical educator and director for critical care, along with her DNP degree, was evident as she implemented changes to improve patient experiences and quality outcomes.JoAnn rounds every day on staff, patients, and families. She huddles with the staff on night and day staff every morning, updating and communicating information. The critical care management team, including practitioners, is engaged in improving the quality of care the critical care patients receive. These are the improved quality outcomes achieved by the team under Joann’s leadership:

The critical care/ stepdown unit has had zero catheter-associated urinary tract infections and zero central line-associated bloodstream infections for the past 14 months.

JoAnn has led her team in a Pressure Injury Prevention Program which resulted in 82.5% reduction in hospital acquired pressure injuries over ten months. She shared this success in 2 podium presentations.

JoAnn has embraced other departments in improving quality outcomes through evident based research. She is started a unit based quality project, including dietary and critical care intensivists. The tube feeding is calculated for 24 hours versus an hourly rate; patients receive better nutrition, prevent pressure injuries, and heal faster.

JoAnn initiated the Resuscitation Committee and was key in the implementation of a code management module for all LifePaks to evaluate the effectiveness of codes. With her evaluation of the effectiveness of codes, her presentation to the medical and nursing team, and the implementation of simulated mock Mega Codes, the metrics showed improvement in the quality of resuscitation. JoAnn presented this success as a podium presentation.

These quality improvements have significantly improved patient experience. This year, JoAnn and her team have significantly improved patient experience scores in seven out of eight domains, scoring over the national threshold. These successful quality outcomes, patient experience, and staff satisfaction have led JoAnn to apply for the 2023 Beacon Award. Results remain pending.
