How do I put into words my deep gratitude for Laura Egle RN, 10 Webber North? My husband received a bone marrow transplant in and was a patient for nearly a month. This is when we first met Laura. As you can imagine, being admitted to this unit is frightening not knowing what this journey would entail. We were greeted by Laura, whose upbeat personality and nursing skill immediately put us at ease. Seeing her nearly daily reassured me that my husband was receiving the best care possible. His recovery from the bone marrow transplant was successful and he was discharged in record time. All was going weil until nine months later when during a routine visit to the Dresner Clinic, his lab results revealed severe hemolysis resulting in an unexpected admission once again. We were immediately relieved to see Laura's familiar face. She continually encouraged and confidently supported us during this stay. Upon discharge, we said our goodbyes, both thinking our second visit was a slight detour on his recovery journey. Unfortunately, it was not to be. Less than two weeks before our daughter's wedding my husband was readmitted again for hemolysis. This admission was disappointing, not only because of the apparent setback, but also because it threatened our ability to attend our daughter's wedding in San Diego, California. While realistic about the medical situation, Laura remained optimistic and did everything she could to facilitate a just-in-time discharge. We flew out to the West Coast after discharge and arrived in time to enjoy this milestone in our family's life. The story doesn't end here. Weeks later, my husband was readmitted for blood clots and then most recently spent three weeks on on the unit for pneumonia and sepsis. While his health has had dramatic highs and lows, one constant through it all has been our nurse, Laura. It is important to note that she is not only upbeat, supportive, compassionate, and has a great sense of humor, but she is a skilled practitioner. Both he and I know our way around a hospital. My husband is trained as a CRNA, and I am an RN with a PICU background. We know good care when we see it and Laura is emblematic of what a great nurse is. Being admitted to to Oncology is life-altering due to the diagnosis that lands you there. Having a care team of the highest caliber is a hallmark of Karmanos Cancer Institute. But having a nurse like Laura has been a God-send. She embodies what The DAISY Award is all about and is most deserving of this honor. We are honored to know Laura and to have been fortunate enough to experience her care.
