Joanne’s ability to navigate the fast-paced environment of the Emergency Department with urgency and safety was commendable. Her expertise and positive demeanor created a supportive atmosphere for both patients and fellow healthcare professionals.
Joanne Hathaway, my preceptor in the Emergency Department (ED) in 2023, consistently demonstrated exceptional patient care. Patients frequently expressed gratitude for her dedication to teaching them about their symptoms and providing joy during their brief moments in the ED. Despite the fast-paced nature, Joanne prioritized safe patient care, exceeding expectations for each individual. Collaborating seamlessly with ED peers, lab peers, inpatient peers, EMS/EMT, police, security, facilities, transportation staff, etc., she advocated for treatment needs, asked insightful questions, and graciously shared her knowledge. The Emergency Department serves as the face and doors of the medical field, and Joanne fostered positive relationships with everyone! An experienced nurse, she not only collaborated effectively but also embraced roles as leader, teacher, and advocate, making significant contributions to the BWFH community and beyond. Joanne’s ability to navigate the fast-paced environment of the Emergency Department with urgency and safety was commendable. Her expertise and positive demeanor created a supportive atmosphere for both patients and fellow healthcare professionals. The impact of her mentorship extended beyond my individual experience, contributing to a collaborative and informed nursing team. In addition to her clinical skills, Joanne’s emphasis on personal growth through continued education and reflection set a valuable example. She encouraged seeking guidance, embracing challenges, and fostering a mindset of continuous improvement as nurses. Joanne’s mentorship not only shaped my early nursing career but also instilled a sense of resilience and adaptability crucial for long-term success in the healthcare profession. Wearing her registered nurse credentials with pride, Joanne engaged in research initiatives, discussed policy changes, and aimed for continuous improvement. Her commitment to positive impact through engagement and quality improvement reflected her dedication to nursing and community welfare. In the urgency of the ED, Joanne consistently provided excellent care with a smile, leaving a lasting impression on me as a new nurse and, most importantly, our patients and their loved ones. Joanne Hathaway made the challenging journey of becoming a nurse in the Emergency Department more manageable and enriching. This was constantly something that our patients mentioned while she was out of the room. They were truly impressed with her passion to teach as well as level of care they received. Her positive influence is a testament to the transformative impact that exceptional nursing leadership can have on both colleagues and the healthcare environment! If you know this nurse, then you know without a doubt Joanne meets criteria for the prestigious DAISY Award. I can only hope I can reflect how important Joanne is to patients, families, our community and her commitment to excellency at MGB and BWFH.
