When I didn't have a strong voice, she always ensured that I was still heard, leaning close to listen to my whisper and then being a strong advocate for me.
While I was admitted to the STICU at Methodist earlier this year, I was lucky enough to have Valentina as my nurse for two days. I am a 20-year-old college athlete who was terrified of what was happening to me and upset that I was in the hospital instead of at school with my friends. Immediately after meeting Valentina, it was evident that I was in the best care possible. Valentina was very professional and skilled as a nurse, but she was also incredibly compassionate, personable, and comforting. She was exactly who I needed during two of the scariest days of my life. One example of Valentina's excellent care was her French braiding my hair. I was embarrassed by the condition of my hair at this point, with it having not been washed or brushed in days, but Valentina did not bat an eye and carefully braided my hair. For the first time in a bit, I was able to feel a little more like myself. Throughout the next week, whenever I got compliments on my braided hair, I was able to proudly say "Thanks! One of my amazing nurses did it!" Not only that, but each time she interacted with me, she spoke with the most gentle tone, saying "Hey girlie!" and making me feel as though I was a person rather than just a sick patient. When I didn't have a strong voice, she always ensured that I was still heard, leaning close to listen to my whisper and then being a strong advocate for me. Valentina explained to me everything that she was doing and why, and always used the most therapeutic and intentional language. She immediately eased any anxieties which was worth more than I can put to words. She was also fantastic at explaining what all of the doctors' updates meant, which helped tremendously in understanding what was happening to me. I know this eased my parent's worries as well. She always greeted me with a huge smile, and I learned that a smile goes a long way during the toughest days of your life. I felt as though she deeply cared for me and understood when I was down or needed anything. When I look back at the incredible care I received throughout my whole hospital stay, Valentina immediately comes to mind. She embodies what a nurse and a healthcare professional should be. It is reassuring to know that each shift, while someone is going through the toughest time of their life, they are being cared for by a nurse who treats them as more than just a patient. As someone who hopes to be in the medical field, I will strive to make patients feel just as Valentina made me feel.
