I recently gave birth to my son and during our stay we had several nurses. All of them were great, and took wonderful care of me, my husband, and new baby. Maria Hicks was the nurse that took care of us during the evening that our son was delivered. After the turn of events that evening, I was grateful that Maria was our nurse that night. I ended up having complications right after delivery. As we were preparing to move out of delivery and into a new room, I sat up to get out of bed and into a wheelchair, and immediately I felt incredibly dizzy, as if I was going to pass out. Maria immediately responded by laying me back down and examined my stomach. She noticed that my uterus wasn’t contracting and that something didn’t seem quite right. Due to her experience and longevity as a nurse, she knew to question what was going on and to immediately escalate it to her supervisor and doctors on-call. In short, my uterus hemorrhaged following birth and several blood clots had to be removed along with approximately 2 liters of blood. It was an incredibly painful procedure to remove them, but Maria stood by my side, held my hand (she let me squeeze it from the pain) and helped me get through the entire procedure. This was after she had already helped me push through the delivery of my son earlier that night. Furthermore, Maria did all of this with a calm, focused, positive, supportive, kind, and lighthearted attitude throughout the entire chain of events. Her disposition helped tremendously in keeping any fear during the situation away and helped me remain calm. After everything was finished, she continued to stay in the room, right by my side, for the remainder of her shift as I recovered and tried to get some sleep. She was concerned and wanted to make sure that something else didn’t happen during the night. I don’t know the full extent of what could have happened that evening, however I am grateful that I had the experience, wisdom, kindness, and knowledge of Maria that night. I nominated Maria for The DAISY Award for her extraordinary commitment to patient-centered care, in particular the care of me and my family. While I know that I am in good hands with anyone at UM hospital, if it weren’t for Maria’s quick thinking that evening, I don’t know what could have happened that night.
