When we came in one morning, a sheet with the words to “You are my Sunshine” was sitting beside her bed. They had sung along as my mother hummed through the night.
My mother received excellent care from the nurses at Pratt Hospital for the six days she was a patient there. She has Alzheimer’s/Dementia and was anxious and in a great deal of pain from an infection in a wound. The nurses went above and beyond in comforting my mom and attempting to ease her anxiety. They asked what had helped in the past, and we told them music had been helpful. They brought a radio from the lounge to soothe her. She also hums as a coping mechanism for pain. They listened to her humming and even tried to figure out what song she was humming. When we came in one morning, a sheet with the words to “You are my Sunshine” was sitting beside her bed. They had sung along as she hummed through the night. They also worked to position and reposition her for her comfort. They also worked with doctors to tweak her pain medication to make sure she was as comfortable as possible. They spent time talking with, listening to, and getting to know my family. Their true passion for their work was evident in the way they provided loving care for my mother. My family was able to rest at night, knowing that she was well taken care of.
