Sam was just coming on shift when we had a mom who was 21 weeks pregnant with twins who came in emergently in potential labor. The room was full of an entire team of nurses, RTs, and the OB doctor, but Sam stood out tremendously. She directed every team member efficiently and took charge of the entire situation. Sam was not only an incredible leader to our staff, but she took the time to explain everything that was happening to the mom and her family members. Sam stood by the patient and spoke gently and calmly to her and provided the most compassionate care that a patient in this situation could ask for. She gave updates to the family members every few minutes to help calm their high emotions and was two steps ahead of the plan at all times. Sam talked with the mom about the babies and took time in a scary situation to even ask the baby names and about their family plans. Sam advocated for her patient and the family during a time of stress and helped our entire team provide quality care during their time at BCH. Sam also assisted the OB doctor by having everything she needed at the bedside and ready to go. I’ve known Sam for a few years, and she has always been a great nurse, but seeing her interact with this patient and the way she showed so much love and support to her was incredible.
