It was very emotional for all of the family as well, we had developed a connection, a trusting caring relationship.
Olivia Grosbach was my son’s nurse weekly for a month while he was fighting for his life in the ICU. She was the first nurse who cared for him. When he was emergently admitted from Sumter, Prism hospital. She explained all the tubes and seriousness of his condition. He required one on one care for 3 1/2 weeks. Olivia developed a relationship with all of the family. She explained different procedures he was having done until we were comfortable with the explanation. She was very attentive to all of his needs, vital signs, drips to support his BP, bedside dialysis, og tube, feeding tube, endotracheal tube, ventilator and keeping him clean and groomed, allowing us to stay with him while constantly working on all his care needs. After 3 1/2 weeks he woke up and he was confused and trying to get out of the bed, it took her constant reminders and physical strength to keep him from dislodging one of his tubes. Once he was able to listen and follow commands she would reassure him as to where he was and what had happened to him. His heart rate and BP would start to slow down as she spoke to him, you could tell he trusted her. She would always stop by and check on him as he became more awake on days she wasn’t assigned to him, it put a smile on his face and also was comforting to all of us family members! The day finally came when he was transferred to the 8 th floor, she kept us posted about what room and close to what time the move would take place. She said her goodbyes to my son, he told her she was his favorite nurse and he cried tears of appreciation for Olivia. It was very emotional for all of the family as well, we had developed a connection, a trusting caring relationship. She is the sweetest, kindest, sincere and knowledgeable person and nurse myself, family and my son have ever experienced. I strongly feel Olivia is part of the reason my son survived! What an amazing nurse she is! Forever thankful.
