These are just two examples of the kind of manager Kate is. She listens to and sacrifices for her team and her patients.
I am a staff nurse on maternity and wanted to recognize my manager, Kate Boron. She began as manager over a year ago and has adapted well to her new role making myself and many other nurses feel well supported. Recently, she has gone above and beyond in ways that really highlight her commitment to our unit and patient safety and satisfaction.

The week after Christmas, our unit was very busy, and we had several days of unsafe staffing. Kate showed up for 4 shifts that week that were not part of her schedule. Two shifts started at 3 am; 1 shift was on New Year's Eve, and 1 shift was on New Year's Day. In addition to this, we had a patient who had been readmitted twice postpartum and who was complicated medically and socially and did not feel like her needs were being heard. Kate took care of this patient twice this week, arranging for a talk between the patient and our head OB. This helped calm the patient and allowed the patient to feel like she had the power to advocate for herself.

Kate also cared for this patient later in the week and the patient requested that Kate not leave her side as this patient was scared about the state of her health. Kate stayed with the patient and called a rapid response. With Kate's help, the patient was stabilized medically and felt that her concerns were heard and addressed. These are just two examples of the kind of manager Kate is. She listens to and sacrifices for her team and her patients. Kate has a challenging job running this unit of all women with our many complaints and opinions, but she continues to support us in ways that are not required. Her actions recently show her commitment to our unit and to the staff and patients. I hope she knows how much her sacrifices and her regular day-to-day tasks are appreciated.
