I would like to honor the dedicated, caring, amazing nursing care I have received from Patty Baker as a stage 4 ovarian cancer patient. She administered my first chemo after living through multiple surgeries under a surgeon, who saved my life! Over the years, Patty's knowledge, and determination to serve, listen, and understand her patients’ needs reflects her skill and years of training. Many times, when others could not access my port, there was Patty to save the day, find the paperwork, and pull the correct bag and dose.... All this amounts to my outstanding nurse and friend. After my recent surgery at UCI Orange, I was suffering from post-surgery complications. Released from hospital my abdominal pain was becoming out of control. Instead of improving I was getting worse. I had been throwing up for 2 days, was unable to pass food or eat, had a 300+ diabetes blood sugar, and was weak and blacking out. Suddenly, the doctor told me to get into her office asap. She then scheduled a CT scan, sent orders to the Chao center for full labs, and told me to go now. Upon arriving at the first-floor desk, I was handed walk-in papers. Confused why I was given walk-in papers, I proceeded to the 2nd floor infusion desk. Thank God Patty was there. She immediately assessed something was wrong with me. I explained the situation, and she replied, "Don't worry we have this! Wait by the lab." Next, Patty walked by the lab waiting area, again assuring us. She assured the tech that she would find the required papers, but to please draw the labs asap. And, she implored him, “this is my friend, please do her labs!" Labs were completed and I then went to Radiology. Radiology discovered I had a bowel obstruction. I was then sent to the ER and admitted for 4 days. All these actions saved me! It all started with the labs completed due to Patty's care! I am so extremely grateful for the years of care. And I am extremely grateful for knowing Patty. I have truly experienced her irreplaceable and exemplary care. Her emergency actions made such a difference!
