Memorial High School faced a false active shooter situation in early November. It was recognized it was a false threat, but for about 30 minutes the building was full of fully-armed police officers. The nominator shared, “It was a scary time for our students but our staff and students handled themselves heroically. One of those staff members was Brittany. She calmly and professionally locked down her part of the building, then when the all-clear was given, she quickly went into action assisting the Attendance Secretary and students. Within five minutes of the all-clear, parents started flooding the school wanting to pick up their kids - understandably. She sprung into action, grabbing her laptop and helped check out students and calm worried parents and staff. Over the course of two hours, she worked diligently and quickly, checking out students, talking with parents, and serving as a friendly and welcoming face. Brittany was much more than a “school nurse” - she was a welcoming and calming presence, a gentle friend, and a loving colleague in a rather difficult moment for our school. We are very grateful for her presence in our school.”
