She's truly the kindest person I know, and her compassion is reflected in her nursing care.
Nominated while working in the Medical ICU at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital
The Medical ICU had a unique patient in the unit for a month. Due to the patient's size and medical condition, they required special equipment and treatment modalities. This patient had a rough go. Being intubated and extubated an estimated four times, bronchoscopies, endoscopies, and tracheostomy. The patient was finally able to be decannulated (trach removed) on their 4th week of admission and could breathe independently. During this admission, Lauryn was their nurse for many shifts. Lauryn had developed a strong rapport and bond with the family. This bond was so strong that the family would specifically ask for Lauryn to be the patient's nurse. The way the parents would light up when they'd see Lauryn, even if she wasn't the patient's nurse and was just stopping by to say hi. This bond had developed as Lauryn fiercely advocated for the patient and the family. She went above and beyond when the patient needed extra support through multiple instances of respiratory distress.
Lauryn maintained a cool, calm, and collected attitude when faced with challenges related to the patient's condition. I've had the honor of getting to know and work alongside Lauryn over the past four years. She's truly the kindest person I know, and her compassion is reflected in her nursing care. Lauryn was able to be the patient's nurse on their last day in the Medical ICU before being discharged home. The patient's admission had come full circle, with Lauryn wheeling them out of the unit and cheering the patient on. The family was beyond grateful for our unit's care, but more importantly, the compassion and care Lauryn delivered during each of her shifts with them. I don't think there could have been a better nurse for this patient, as I truly believe Lauryn brought the family a sense of peace during this difficult time in their lives. This is a true testament to not only the type of nurse Lauryn is but also human. I'm so honored to have the privilege of having Lauryn as a colleague as well as a friend.
