Filling in this role was not required of Ashley but she prioritized patients and her team and stepped into the role to help out.
Ashley does not work the prenatal intake nurse position regularly, filling in this role was not required of her but Ashley prioritized patients and her team and stepped into the role to help out. I am so thankful for Ashley! She exemplifies all the IUH values and is an invaluable asset to the OB team and our patients. Because there are only two nurses trained to see prenatal intake appointments, when one of the nurses had to have emergency surgery, about 25 patients needed to be rescheduled and would have to wait four weeks to be rescheduled again to establish care for their pregnancy. To prevent delaying care for these patients and prevent overloading the one prenatal intake nurse that was still in office, Ashley agreed to fill in for prenatal intake and avoid patients being inconvenienced/delayed in care. Ashley's help with seeing the patients was outstanding! She was amazing! She was conscientious about the care she was providing to our new OB patients. She ensured patients were receiving high quality care from her, patients were being referred properly, having proper labs ordered for their pregnancy screenings, and addressed any issues patients had during the visit with her. Ashley "owned" the visit and processes with excellence, treating each patient with the highest consideration of their needs and taking care of them and making sure she was fulfilling the needs of the patient while capturing the information needed to provide the best care for the patient. You would never know that Ashley was not a full time prenatal intake nurse. While filling in, a few patients expressed complex social situations during their intake appointment, which made caring for the patient more difficult for Ashley because she does not do intake appointments full time or regularly to know how we handle these situations. However, Ashely handled it with compassion and empathy as well as excellence. She reached out to resources to ensure patients were not slipping through the cracks and were connected to services for mental health needs and intimate partner violence. She proactively prepared for each visit with chart reviews, emailing education/forms to patients ahead of time, addressing scheduling issues, and trying to get in front of any issues before any issues would have a negative impact on our patients. Filling in this role was not required of Ashley but she prioritized patients and her team and stepped into the role to help out. I am so thankful for Ashley and the care she provided to our OB patients! Ashley is an example to others, demonstrating what it means to be a nurse and live our values with commitment to EXCELLENCE, COMPASSION, PURPOSE, AND TEAM WORK.
