Laura saw a recent need in one of our pregnant patients who was suffering unimaginable grief after surviving a home fire that took the lives of her two young daughters. The patient had come to be seen for OB services when Laura observed her need so great, she didn’t even have undergarments to wear.

Laura took it upon herself to inquire if we could adopt this patient for the holidays, as she was expected to come back in for delivery in early December. When formal permission was granted by our hospital, Laura contacted the patient to see what her greatest needs were and gather sizes. Laura then recruited help from the other staff on our unit to collect and purchase personal items to donate to this family. Following the birth of the patient’s recent baby, Laura again communicated with the patient and coordinated the delivery of gifts to her room and then out to their vehicle to take home. The patient and her family were totally overwhelmed and appreciative of the generosity of the team under Laura’s leadership.

I’m very proud of all of Laura’s efforts and to have her as one of my clinical leaders. Laura demonstrates our mission every day, but this day in particular will always stand out to me as a wonderful example of living the value “Commitment to Those Who are Poor.”
