Fikru wanted to make the patient feel special and, without telling anyone else, bought balloons, cakes, and a card for him; this is one of the many acts of kindness and empathy.
I am writing to enthusiastically nominate Fikru Kene for the DAISY Award. As a valued member of our team, he consistently demonstrates exemplary dedication, compassion, and professionalism in all aspects of his work.
One of his standout qualities is his unwavering commitment to providing exceptional care to our patients. He goes above and beyond to ensure every patient receives the attention and support they need, even in the most challenging circumstances. For example, he recently cared for a complex patient with behavioral issues. The day he took care of him happened to be the patient’s birthday. Although the patient was agitated and unpleasant with staff, Fikru wanted to make the patient feel special and, without telling anyone else, bought balloons, cakes, and a card for him; this is one of the many acts of kindness and empathy. His ability to remain calm and composed under pressure and to find effective solutions speaks volumes about his professionalism and dedication to patients.
In addition to his exceptional patient care skills, he is also a dedicated team player who continuously strives to improve our unit and shows genuine concern for every member of our team. For example, while he was my preceptor, he noticed that I was not confident with communicating with other staff on the unit and had a problem asking for help from the unit techs and staff nurses. He took it upon himself to go all over the unit, introducing me to everyone and even the doctors and created opportunities where I could use SBAR, delegate, and direct me to situations where I needed to ask for help. He encourages his colleagues to pursue professional development opportunities like certificates and advocates for shared governance initiatives to enhance unit operations. His leadership and proactive approach to fostering a positive work environment have been instrumental in promoting, collaborating, and growth within our team.
Moreover, he is known for his approachable nature and willingness to support his colleagues. He creates a welcoming atmosphere where team members feel comfortable asking questions and sharing their experiences. His mentorship and guidance have been invaluable to both new and seasoned staff nurses, fostering a culture of learning, equity, and respect.
On a personal note, I can attest to his profound impact on my professional growth. His encouragement and support have empowered me to strive for excellence in my work and to continuously seek opportunities for growth and development.
