I was taken to the Portland VA Hospital for hip replacement surgery by my daughter. I’m 75 and Navy Vet 1968-1974. This procedure is daunting. I had plenty of time to study and meet with the folks assigned to prepare and educate me months in advance. I was made to feel informed about the process and materials used in my hip. The entire team was professional and efficient.

Since this is a nomination letter, I wish to single out that person who provided care and comfort to me beyond excellence. That person is Carmen Moos. Carmen came to my pre-op gurney, introduced herself, and told me she would be with me in the operating room and after in post-op. Carmen held my hands as the spinal block was administered. When I went to sleep, she was there telling me I would be fine as I was in great hands. When I woke up, she was there holding my hands as my body convulsed from the shock of the operation. Carmen looked into my eyes as an angel of mercy, compassion, caring, and understanding of what I had gone through. Carmen stayed close, checking my condition until my daughter was allowed to be by my side.

It has been ten days of home recovery; I am still amazed at how her compassion made recovery feel like there was a guardian angel assigned to me personally. Well done, Carmen. You have a calling from high. Thank you.
