In addition to providing great medical care, she was also in tune with his emotional needs.
My son was admitted with a rare bacterial infection, necrotizing fasciitis. Suzy Munoz was his nurse during his second and third fasciotomies. She was very attentive, beyond the traditional ‘can I get you anything else.’ It really seemed like she knew how dangerous his infection was; she paid extra attention to his vitals and general well-being, and we felt that she really cared about him as a person. The real difference became obvious on an occasion when I and many doctors were talking about various situations and outcomes in front of my son. He is so strong, and nothing seems to faze him, so I was fine having these conversations in front of him. I didn’t notice that he was struggling inside, but Suzy did. All the doctors left the room, she looked at my son and said, ‘you don’t have to be strong. You can just be a kid and let us be the doctors.’ He cried on her shoulder for the next minute. I found this to be incredible. In addition to providing great medical care, she was also in tune with his emotional needs. When she left, my son told me that no one could quite compare. I told him, it’s okay. We had Suzy just at the right time when you were in serious need. Now, she has to move on because she’s needed elsewhere. We wanted to recognize Suzy for her remarkable efforts and for having such a positive impact on our hospital stay.
