She observed the changes in my mom over the week, and when doctors came in who had not initially met my mother, she was an advocate regarding those changes that we found so concerning.
My mother was admitted to 4NW on February 20, 2023 with an infection that got out of control. On Friday, February 24th, she requested that all treatment end. On Tuesday, February 28th, she died. Sierra was the nurse on duty when I arrived from Washington State, where I live, on Tuesday the 21st. She was not only kind and professional, she was very attentive and when my mom and our family asked questions, she listened carefully. My mom has been sick and had surgeries my entire life. I have experienced many hospital stays and witnessed her care after surgeries more times than I can count. The entire nursing staff, but especially Sierra, was professional, attentive and so very, very kind. She was also an advocate for my mom's care. She observed the changes in my mom over the week, and when doctors came in who had not initially met my mother, she was an advocate regarding those changes that we found so concerning. She recognized when my mom's health took a dangerous turn, and called for doctors when necessary. When my mom was receiving hospice care and we had difficulties with a security guard letting my Dad and sister come up after hours after they had already been approved, she advocated for them. When my mom decided to end treatment, I asked if I could stay overnight with her. Sierra found me a comfortable chair and not only checked in on my mom regularly, but was kind and checked in on me. I stayed overnight for four nights. Sierra was the night nurse for two of those nights. She always made extra effort to make sure the change of duty nurse was updated and met with us, spending extra time answering questions and making sure the transition was smooth. Because of nurses like Sierra, when the time came for my mom to be entered in hospice care, we asked to keep her on 4NW, under the 4NW team's care. It was the best choice we made and I am grateful for it. Hospitals can feel very detached. When people are sick, hurting, dying, not being truly listened to, not taking the time, not being treated with respect can make things worse. Sierra has a human touch that made all the difference for my mom and my family during one of the most difficult times of our lives.
