As her mentor for the past eight weeks, I have gotten to know Kristal Colberg as a young nurse and as a person. Kristal is always smiling, positive, and such a team player. We were at the very end of our shift, and a patient came in with cardiac arrest (the patient was not hers). Kristal was the first to assist with concerns and took charge of the patient, who was covered in urine and feces. Kristal, without hesitation, started cleaning him up, preserving the man's dignity. As I helped her and watched her take the initiative to clean up the patient, it brought a tear to my eye. Afterward, I asked her why she was so quick to clean up the patient, and she responded, "I view patients as if they were my parents." As her mentor, I was extremely proud of my nurse resident. I made sure to let her know the pride I was feeling for her and advised her that she should always keep that in mind no matter how many years she conquers as a nurse. With that being said, it is with great pride that I recommend such a bright, talented new nurse for the DAISY Award.
