I nominated Holli Simington for The DAISY Award for her exemplary care of patients, staff members, and basically any one she comes into contact with. I’ve personally known Holli for years, starting when I worked in ACT and she worked in UCC and then when we both worked in USS. To put it mildly, we disliked each other completely from the moment we met each other. We’d work together, do our jobs, but not speak to each other unless we absolutely had to. Then everything changed. Holli and I had to take over care of a quickly crashing Veteran in UCC. She and I teamed up to quickly assess, treat, start IV’s (multiple), and transfer this septic veteran out of UCC and to a local hospital. From then on, we became better then colleagues but friends. She and I worked better than most together until we both ended up leaving the UCC and moving on to other places within the VA. While working in UCC, Holli completed her BSN and MSN, for that as a co-worker and friend, I couldn’t be more proud of her. Holli was an awesome asset to the education department, leading the Unconscious Bias training and discussions, re-instituting and working with the RNTTP program nurses, instituting the DAISY program, and orientation of new staff. Holli is a tireless advocate for RN’s to pursue furthering their education. For me personally she has “reminded” me to get my BSN started/done since she started hers while working in UCC. Recently Holli took a position as the Assistant manager of CLC. She’s an asset to their team as well. I hear about her frequently on morning report that she continues to do the awe-inspiring work she’s always done. Yesterday she and the Recreation Therapy Department set up a way for a veteran housed in the CLC unit to virtually attend his sister's funeral since he couldn’t be there in person. I could go on and on about her and the wonderful work she does, what an asset she is to our community of staff members, and the beautiful person that she is. She certainly deserves this honor in my book.
