At one point, she was giving me information out in the hallway, and she clearly saw the concern and sadness in my eyes. Without hesitation, she reached out, gave me a hug, and assured me it was okay to worry.
My two elderly aunts were patients for more than 2 weeks. My one aunt has been fading fast from terminal ovarian cancer, the other was across the ward due to complications as an amputee. As the only family member who had come to visit (multiple times from 350 miles away), it was very difficult and frightening as I watched my aunt struggle in pain. The first day I visited for 12 hours, after driving 6 hours to get there. I knew I had to sleep, so I left my aunt that first night, knowing she was in good hands with a floating nurse named Nicole. She had checked on my aunt regularly that first day. Nicole was kind and sympathetic, and at every visit, she asked what she could do for me as well. The following morning, when I returned, Nurse Nicole was still there, still helpful, caring, and genuinely compassionate. She did everything within her power to help my aunt be more comfortable while addressing my various concerns about skin tears, IV sites, etc. She even attempted to place a new IV, but my aunt's veins would not allow for it. At one point, she was giving me information out in the hallway, and she clearly saw the concern and sadness in my eyes. Without hesitation, she reached out, gave me a hug, and assured me it was okay to worry. It was the first act of simple kindness I had seen in my many visits to my aunt. After a 12+ hour shift, she was still working tirelessly and diligently, helping both her and I understand what was happening. She made it feel as though my aunt was her only patient. She genuinely cares, and it showed. My only regret was that as a floater, I did not have a chance to see her again to tell her just how much she had changed my experience and how grateful I was that she had been a huge part of my aunt's care. I will forever be thankful for her outstanding efforts, knowledge, and compassion; thank you, Nicole!
