Andy brought me tea and sat with me for thirty minutes just talking to me, talking through some of my questions and fears about what would happen if my mental and emotional state continued to decline, helping me through the worst of my emotional spiral while the medication worked and I was able to get some rest.
Friday night during my 6-day stay at Aurora, when visitors were leaving (and my visitor had not come), I stepped to the nurse's station to ask for lorazepam because I was extremely upset at not having a visitor and my thoughts were beginning to race out of control. I told Andy I was starting to "spiral." He recognized exactly what was happening with me and instead of giving me lorazepam, he gave me a dose of zyprexa which quickly calmed me and slowed my mind. But the true Florence Nightingale moment came after that: After I returned to my room to allow the medication to work and myself to process what happened, Andy brought me tea and sat with me for thirty minutes just talking to me, talking through some of my questions and fears about what would happen if my mental and emotional state continued to decline, helping me through the worst of my emotional spiral while the medication worked and I was able to get some rest. I want to recognize Andy for taking the extra time I needed and giving it to me without complaint and with a helpful and glad heart. He made such an impression on me and I will always remember his act of generosity and kindness, helping me through my own "vale of tears" in the midst of a very scary (but ultimately stabilizing) hospital stay.
