The father was in tears over the experience. Ashley was able to take the patient and the father outside to watch Santa. The father was beyond grateful.
Ashley continues to be a model for atraumatic, patient-family-focused care in the CEC. Ashley goes above and beyond for all of her patients, coworkers, and families. Ashley cares for every patient as she would her own children one day, and as if everyone is family. When rounding on patients and families, I consistently receive feedback on how wonderful Ashley is as a nurse and a human. She is a model for all of our service standards on the unit. She is an EPIC champion and strives to educate the unit in every area she can assist with.
I could provide numerous stories regarding Ashley's exceptional patient care. There is one story recently that really is a testament to her care that occurred recently. Ashley had two patients that were admission holds on the unit for 18 hours. This was a day that Santa and his elves from reedy creek were repelling off the hospital and, on the unit, visiting. Even though Santa came around to all of the children's rooms to visit, Ashley knew that her patients needed to get off the unit and get some fresh air and experience Santa repelling off the hospital. Ashley knew that she had to get her patients that experience. One parent stayed in the room per request, but one of the other patients was beyond elated to get out of the hospital room for a few minutes. The father was in tears over the experience. Ashley was able to take the patient and the father outside to watch Santa. The father was beyond grateful. It takes a special kind of nurse to understand WHOLE-CARE and how we not only treat our patients while in the ER with interventions but also by treating our patients beyond the hospital rooms. The family states they will never forget Ashley and her compassion for their child. She was able to turn a frustrating, long experience into something that the family was ever so grateful for. Ashley is the nurse that we all strive to be, and we are lucky to have her in the CEC. She embodies all the elements of an exceptional nurse.
