Every night, we kept our fingers crossed that she would be our nurse again. She gained our trust by showing genuine concern about her pain and care in general.
During our daughter's hospitalization, I knew from the first interaction with Karlene that she was a special nurse. She never treated our daughter as just a patient. With almost every interaction, she would talk with our daughter to get to know her better. She’d ask about school, what she liked about it, and what she did for fun. Every night, we kept our fingers crossed that she would be our nurse again. She gained our trust by showing genuine concern about her pain and care in general. She never made us feel like we were a nuisance when we would turn on the call light. When we were discharged, Karlene was not on shift. We drove 2 hours to get home, thinking that my daughter's pain medicine prescription was ready for pick up at Walgreens. When we got to Walgreens, nothing was available for pickup. I called the hospital, and Karlene stated she would contact a member of the surgical team to ensure that we got our prescription so that my daughter would not suffer from pain all night. The order to Walgreens was entered by a provider who did not have the proper credentials to order narcotics. I called Karlene again and told her what Walgreens informed me. Karlene and her Charge Nurse elevated the situation to the Attending provider who eventually called in the order to Walgreens. We ended up getting the meds we needed that night and our daughter slept comfortably. This is a shining example of going above and beyond, and for this reason, I nominate Nurse Karlene for the DAISY Award. She is truly an outstanding nurse.
