When a place was identified for them to go, Laurie went to the store and, with her own money, bought some clothes, toiletries, and a car seat so the mom and baby could have the basics in their new setting.
I am nominating Laurie Cobiski, nurse manager for the University City Emergency Department, for the DAISY Nurse Leader Award.

Laurie is an outstanding nurse manager, leading by example with integrity, fairness, and compassion. She cares deeply not only about her staff but also about patients who come into the ED. I have three examples of her care and compassion that I would like to share with the committee.

Several months ago, University ED had a long-term social hold, a teenage female with no family support and was difficult to find placement for due to behavioral outbursts. She was in the ED for almost seven months. She was getting no school support due to her complicated history of being in 17 group homes since she was five years old; she never had consistent schooling or a consistent living environment. Laurie spent some time with this patient, ordered some educational material, and started providing homeschooling, or ED schooling. This also included a US map so she could learn the states. Laurie worked with her periodically until she finally got placement and left our facility.

We also had a mother and baby come in from a difficult, abusive home environment with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. When a place was identified for them to go, Laurie went to the store and, with her own money, bought some clothes, toiletries, and a car seat so the mom and baby could have the basics in their new setting.

The last example, but certainly not all that Laurie has done for patients and her teammates, is about a teammate who was in crisis at work and shared with Laurie that she was suicidal. Laurie went with the teammate down to the behavioral health emergency department and waited for her to be seen by a psychiatric provider before she left. These actions go far beyond the typical duties of a nurse manager and represent what a great leader does.

Laurie lives out the mission criteria for Elevating Hope by modeling empathy and demonstrating a caring attitude in all three of the examples I shared with you. The examples also represent another mission criterion of For All: she established "a special connection" with those two patients and the teammate to promote an inclusive environment for all. Please consider Laurie Cobiski for The DAISY Nurse Leader Award.
