She got my pain medicine for me and said I needed to walk. She left no other option. I knew I had better try. So with her help, I was up and walking!! She didn't try to nag me. She just found a solution to my problem.
I had bariatric surgery done recently. The surgery went off without a hitch. I have lupus, diabetes, along with other challenges with my health. So fast forward to me getting in my room. It wasn't Winter, but she was good, as well. The night shift comes on and that's when I met Winter. She introduced herself, checked my incisions, and said she would be right back. She explained to me that she was doing rounds and getting reports and asked me if that was ok and if I needed anything immediately. I have never, and I do mean NEVER, had a nurse get the report, look at an incision(s), and ask me (the patient) if they could go get the report and round her other patients first. This amazed me! Winter Minton, RN, made me feel like I was the only patient in the hospital. Every encounter I had with Winter, was the same. She not only saw to what I needed, but again, I was the only patient in the hospital. She had a discussion with me about my pain meds, their importance and getting up and walking while being on pain meds. I was hurting but I needed to get up and walk. While the surgical floor is hopping with patient needs, Winter strikes again making me feel like I was the only patient in the hospital. She encouraged me to walk and would not just let me lay in bed. She got my pain medicine for me and said I needed to walk. She left no other option. I knew I had better try. So with her help, I was up and walking!! She didn't try to nag me. She just found a solution to my problem. (I am hurting and can't walk). She always explained everything to me as far as my medicines and what they were for. If it had not been for Nurse Winter, I'd probably still be lying in the bed, hurting, not walking. Because of her, I know the scheduling of pain meds and walking together is a must for me. Since then, I've been able to get up and walk and I know how to time it. If she treats all of her patients the way she treats me, I know they are just as blessed as me to have her as a nurse. She was completely dedicated to getting me better. I had a problem. She had a plan. Because of that, I am healing so much better! This is why I want to nominate Nurse Winter Minton for a DAISY award. All the nurses deserve recognition for their outstanding care and bedside manners. But it was Nurse Winter who went above and beyond for me, and she didn't have to. She is a true DAISY Nurse!
