He has such a warm and generous nature that he made that room feel like a home in the worst possible moment.
My mother was admitted to the ER, and by the time we ended up in the MICU a couple of days later, she was facing the news of inoperable cancer and imminent death (she chose to go DNR and DNI into hospice care). Marvin did a phenomenal job in looking after her in technical terms during those tough first days, but even more importantly, he has such a warm and generous nature that he made that room feel like a home in the worst possible moment. With words of encouragement and the wisdom of his own experience, sharing our tears even, and with sweet small gifts - a knitted prayer blanket for her gifted to the unit by a church group, and for me a little bottle containing my mom’s vital signs printed out on a paper scroll — he made what might have been a night in an unremitting emotional abyss into a beautiful ritual moment. I know it made my mom so joyful even amidst the fear. And I will remember that magic forever. I know Marvin had about a million other duties to fulfill, so giving us this time and extra care that night and the subsequent ones, as well as stopping by to say hello even yesterday when she wasn’t even his patient anymore (or even awake anymore!) was just so far beyond exceptional care I wanted to send this nomination.
