They stepped up and led us through it. Not only did they lead, but they were side-by-side with us during the changes. Hand in hand, we braved this new (very brand new for most of us) job. Dom and the ANMs never faltered. They never left us.
Last summer our world was rocked on 4B when we were told a select few of us would be moving to a new unit for Transplant and Intermediate Care Patients to expand the kidney transplant care we have been providing for nearly 2 years on 4B. It was to be a “nicer” environment for our transplant patients. We were nervous. We were sad because our unit had already suffered through many changes over the last year, including the moving on of our beloved nurse manager, who was promoted to Director of Nursing at another Prisma Health hospital. We were then told that on top of transplant we would also take care of intermediate patients. Most of us were telemetry nurses, and very good telemetry nurses at that. This was new. Scary. And very, very shaky at first. It was no secret that the ICU nurses from the unit we were transferring to had to transition to other units. So, our transition was not well received at first. Enter Dom and his assistant nurse managers. They stepped up and led us through it. Not only did they lead, but they were side-by-side with us during the changes. Hand in hand, we braved this new (very brand new for most of us) job. Dom and the ANMs never faltered. They never left us. They worked and continue to do so. This type of leadership is rarely recognized or awarded; it’s just expected. To be honest, none of them had to stay. I’m not sure I would have given the same circumstances. Dom and the ANMs didn’t have to work with us. I wouldn’t have if I was in the same situation. They didn’t have to coach us, lift us up, wipe away many tears, because I’m not sure I could have. I’m proud of my team, and I’m proud of Dom & the ANMs and how they have led us through this difficult transition.
