Kaitlyn, was able to observe our daughter’s body language and non-verbal cues and understand our daughter’s needs and wants.
We have a 12-year-old, non-verbal, highly dependent, autistic daughter with a rare genetic syndrome called Jordan’s Syndrome. Our daughter was hospitalized due to self-injurious behavior, which is a sign that she is likely experiencing some form of physical discomfort. Our nurse, Kaitlyn Taylor, was able to observe our daughter’s body language and non-verbal cues and understand our daughter’s needs and wants. It seemed like she could read these needs just as well as us parents. With a non-verbal child, it is easy to dismiss her self-injurious behavior as just behavior; however, knowing our child, she usually does not engage in self-injurious behavior unless she is experiencing extreme discomfort or pain. Kaitlyn noticed this and was able to effectively advocate on our daughter’s behalf to the doctors overseeing her treatment plan. This led to some breakthroughs in her treatment. We learned from Kaitlyn that she had a background in working with non-verbal disabled adults, which helped her to recognize that there are different, non-verbal ways of communicating. Further, Kaitlyn regularly went above and beyond what is normally expected of a nurse, and among other things, she asked to be assigned to our daughter on her on-call day when she could have been assigned to a less time-intensive patient.
