She listened to our stories, held our hands, and talked us through every step. She anticipated our needs before we could even think of them.
Recently, a dear friend of mine became a patient here at Jewish Hospital. He fought a long battle and was treated on many different floors at Jewish before ultimately passing away. Chelsie was his nurse on the day the decision was made to remove him from life support, and she was with us when he passed. The amount of compassion she showed for him and his loved ones was like nothing I have ever experienced. She helped me find the best words to comfort his family when they were trying to decide how to proceed with his care. She was there with tissues and was offering hugs and words of comfort to complete strangers. If any IVs or equipment alarmed while we were saying our goodbyes, she would slip into his crowded room and silence everything without interrupting us. She listened to our stories, held our hands, and talked us through every step. She anticipated our needs before we could even think of them. Watching Chelsie care for her patient while also caring for her patient's loved ones shows how much is put on a nurse's shoulders, but she carries that weight with grace and love. I don't know what magic Chelsie is made of, but it's something I've never witnessed in my 15 years in healthcare. Jewish Hospital is lucky to have Chelsie Skillman.
