To see the impact that Shay had on this family was amazing. She gave them a place to grieve, to talk about the person and mother the patient was, to laugh about silly memories, and most of all a space to feel comfortable doing that.
Shay is an extremely caring and compassionate nurse, and the following is just one example of how she goes above and beyond for her patients and their families. Shay was caring for a young patient who had recently given birth to her 4th child, unfortunately the patient suffered complications post-childbirth that caused her to be on life support and ultimately was declared brain dead. The patient was an organ donor and was with us for multiple days while waiting for the organ donation process to be completed. Shay spent the last 2 days prior to the patient's passing caring for the patient and the patient's family. She combed and conditioned the patient's long hair, while the family talked about how much the patient loved her long/thick hair and how she was worried about losing it with this pregnancy. Shay let the patient's dad pick out a nail polish color that he thought she would love to paint her nails. She listened to the stories about the patient and made laminated cards for the patient's four young children that read, "The imprint you left will never fade from my heart....-Mom" and carefully used an ink pad to get fingerprints from the patient in the shape of a heart to put at the top of the card. She made heartbeat bottles for the family and kids as well as braiding locks of hair to add to the bottles as keepsakes at the request of the family. In the last couple of hours that the fiancé of the patient had with her, Shay helped him make plaster castings of the patient's hand (so that her children could hold her hand when she was gone) as well as one of the fiancé holding the patient's hand. Shay stayed hours past her shift to make sure to get the castings done and spent the time listening to memories her fiancé had while their hands had to be submerged in the bucket for the shape to take place. To see the impact that Shay had on this family was amazing. She gave them a place to grieve, to talk about the person and mother the patient was, to laugh about silly memories, and most of all a space to feel comfortable doing that. Although the outcome was not what any of us wanted, I know that the love, compassion, empathy, and care that Shay gave was exactly what this family needed.
