My mom was taken to MGH and got a cancer diagnosis on her second day. We were completely stunned. My mom was then admitted to the Medical Oncology floor. Stephanie became my mom's nurse. She was like no other. My mom had already been declining for the last few months, and now we knew why. My mom had a couple of major procedures done on her spine to help with treatment. We found out that the biopsy results weren’t good. After meeting with the team (oncologist and NP), my mom chose to move forward with comfort care. We knew it was best but were heartbroken. As I left that day, Stephanie could tell I was struggling. She led me to a private area to talk to me about how I was doing, not about my mom but about me! Moving forward, whenever I saw Stephanie, she knew exactly who I was and checked on ME numerous times during my visits with my mom. On Wednesday, we got the call that my mom would most likely have anywhere from a few hours to a day or 2. My mom made it through the night, but we ultimately knew it wouldn't be much longer. The next day, I came in and touched base with Steph again. She was 100% real and honest with me, and based on my mother’s changes overnight, she said, “I can't see her making it to the end of my shift.” We had that feeling but we're glad she felt comfortable to tell us and not hold back made a world of difference. She was checking on us every half an hour at least and tending to my mother. She made us feel like we were the only ones she had (although we know she had other patients and tended to them as well). Ultimately, at 3:30 that afternoon, my mom passed away. My dad and I handled it quite well, all things considered. We are forever grateful for the support and attentiveness Stephanie provided to our family. She was by far the reason this whole experience went the way it did. She was kind, loving, and caring for my mom, the patient, and my family as caregivers. She made sure we knew everything that was going to be happening with my mom, what they were doing, and why. We are so lucky to have had her as my mom's nurse during her short stay on the Medical Oncology floor of MGH.
