Christine’s patients are consistently highly satisfied with their care and prefer her to make the nursing visits over anyone else whenever she is available.
It is my great honor to nominate Christine Karg, RN, WCC, OMS for The DAISY Award at this time. Christine has proven to us time and time again that hard work and dedication can lead to immense professional growth and development. Just a little over 5 years ago, Chris came to VNA Health Group after working in an acute care setting. While acute care experience provided her with a strong foundational skill set and a multi-faceted knowledge of direct patient care needs, she emphasized a desire to elevate her practice to a higher level. She conveyed a love for learning and teaching, and a strong interest in finding a specialty that would allow for more individualized care planning and follow-through with patients. She longed to find a niche where she could collaborate with an interdisciplinary team and apply evidence-based practices in such a way that she could also return to evaluate efficacy and make refinements as needed. Simply put, she wanted to function to the fullest scope of her practice and make a real difference in patients’ lives. Christine has found her calling in home care. She has earned the Preceptor title and wound and ostomy certifications, and she has joined multiple committees to support the organization with documentation enhancement efforts and identification of nursing practice issues. She provides new hires with a thorough and comprehensive orientation and frequently accepts nursing students to shadow her. One BSN student from NJCU enjoyed her rotation with Chris so much that she applied to work for our team full time upon Chris’s recommendation, and that nurse is now becoming a preceptor on our team as well! Chris tells me on a regular basis that she loves her job, and I see evidence of that all the time. She has developed strong working relationships with her fellow nurses as well as the local therapists, social workers, nutritionists, and aides. I have received multiple compliments per year from patients and caregivers wishing to thank Chris the Case Manager and all the wonderful members of the care team. I believe this really shows first-hand how well she case manages and communicates not only with the clients, but also with the care team. We have had many case conferences and countless hours of email or voice communication regarding complex cases, and Chris works very hard to keep everyone abreast of changes so that the resulting care at the bedside is well-planned, coordinated, and cohesive. On multiple occasions, Chris has saved patients’ lives by recognizing subtle changes, translating her findings via prompt SBAR communication, and making sound nursing judgment calls to quickly get the patients to safety. Although these types of medical emergencies require hospital admissions, Chris makes every effort to prevent avoidable hospital admissions by treating patients in their homes with individualized and innovative treatments that she has picked up and mastered during many hours of course work. She re-evaluates patient progress at regular intervals and makes adjustments as needed to provide our patients with the best chance of recovery. I should also note that Christine was part of the first teams of nurses trained in high-risk (formerly known as SWAT) precautions, and she provided care to patients with active Covid-19 from the earliest known cases on service in 2020 through to the current. The pandemic was challenging and fear-provoking in many ways, and I am forever grateful to her for her steadfast commitment to patient care equity and service excellence during that time. Christine Karg is truly deserving of The DAISY Award, and I endorse this nomination whole-heartedly! I have received multiple compliments per year from patients and caregivers wishing to thank Chris the case manager and all the wonderful members of the care team. I believe this really shows first-hand how well she case manages and communicates not only with the clients, but also with the care team. One patient’s wife called in to give praise to Christine for helping her husband so very much. She was tearful and emotional in expressing how much she appreciated the support during the time her husband was on service with a new diagnosis of Parkinson ’s disease, and she spoke of the wonderful work that Chris does in providing education and encouragement. Another patient called in to say, “The nurses from VNA are great, but Christine is a step above. The way she took care of my wounds and taught me about the Diabetes… I just had to tell you, I don’t know where I would be without her.” Christine’s patients are consistently highly satisfied with their care and prefer her to make the nursing visits over anyone else whenever she is available. This is the case especially with the ostomy patients who have described how she is most competent in helping them with attaining and maintaining a good appliance seal.
