I am a 41-year-old veterinarian who was a patient for one week. I have been on a rollercoaster ever since I was diagnosed with hemiplegia, vestibular migraines, and intracranial hypertension. Throughout my stay, I was well cared for by the amazing staff of nurses and techs, but one nurse stood out above the rest because of his upbeat, positive, yet compassionate and gentle personality. Jeong (Alex) Kim exceeded my expectations and did the common uncommonly well. His positive, upbeat personality is contagious. It’s easy to see how passionate he is about nursing care for his patients. His soft-spoken, gentle touch puts you at ease during a time when nothing is easy. His care has made not just a difference in my life but undoubtedly anyone he knows. In a time like now, post-COVID, where the medical community is burned out – his light keeps shining. Of all the things that I know are contagious at the hospital, I never thought that someone’s upbeat, positive personality would be one. I am thankful and grateful for it because it made the most difficult time in my life less difficult, and for me right now, that is priceless. If there were more nurses like Alex, the hospitals might go out of business – after all, laughter is the best medicine, and being around Alex, you can’t help but smile and laugh as he does.
