While we know that our ED teams are trained to handle emergencies, there's more to patient care than just completing tasks. On this particular night, the ED team handled a double trauma event involving siblings with not only excellent care but also compassion and kindness. The family was bilingual, though Spanish was a preference and the team really stepped in (literally) to be the calm, reassuring voice for one of the patients and guardian. While one nurse held c-spine and pressure to a bleeding head wound, she spoke exclusively to the patient in Spanish with reassurance. A member of our TouchPoint Sitter team also stayed outside the room and spoke in Spanish to the family as needed.

A member of our PICU nursing team came down as soon as the traumas were paged and seamlessly joined the trauma team in providing care to one patient. While her presence was a part of our protocol, her quick actions, experience, and training made her a valuable team member in that moment!
Not only that, but the rest of the ED team worked as a well-oiled machine to fill the roles for two traumas while still managing to round on existing
patients within the ED and provide communication with other teams. Our Charge nurse was a strong Captain for the ship during this time, making sure that all the patients in the department were safe and comfortable, delegating to two of our ED nurses who worked quickly to monitor the existing patient load. Their support of their team members was amazing.

Additionally, the ED physician and Trauma APP were fantastic medical leaders throughout the traumas and after, along with our pediatric intensivist. The three providers handled a surge of patients in the ED as a true team, relying on each other's strengths. Our Trauma APP remained in the unit for quite some time, monitoring the board and seeing patients within her scope. She even applied a patient's splint!

The entire team went above and beyond this night to make sure all patients were cared for! This was an amazing practice of a great healthcare team in
providing family-centered care with compassion and efficiency.
