I am honored to nominate Willie Gutierrez, the Admissions Supervisor at NTSH - WF Campus, for the prestigious DAISY Award. Willie has been the cornerstone of our Admissions Department, building a team that is nothing short of phenomenal. Under his leadership, patient care and safety have always been the top priority, setting a standard of excellence that is unparalleled. Willie is more than a supervisor; he is a mentor and a leader who “grows” people. His ability to teach and nurture has been evident in the remarkable growth of his staff, who often speak of their personal and professional development since joining his team. He ensures that every team member understands their role and provides them with the necessary tools and training to excel in their work.

Working alongside his staff, Willie exemplifies what it means to be patient-centered. His dedication to putting patients first is evident in the care and compassion he consistently provides. His hands-on approach and willingness to complete any task, regardless of its nature, demonstrate his commitment to both patient care and his team. One of Willie’s most significant contributions has been his role in the initiative to evaluate Emergency admissions off-campus. This initiative has not only streamlined the admission process but also had a profound impact on the hospital’s operations. His innovative strategies, such as the new process where patients change clothes immediately upon admission, have greatly reduced contraband issues, showcasing his proactive problem-solving skills. His department’s efforts have significantly increased the hospital’s census, reducing the number of patients waiting in jails.

Willie’s communication skills are exceptional; he can engage with anyone, balancing respect with assertiveness. He faces difficult conversations head-on, whether with staff, patients, supervisors, or external agencies, always striving for the best outcomes. As importantly, Willie is an engaged, interested listener who makes others feel heard and valued. Thorough, conscientious, and reliable, Willie is the person to whom we turn when something needs to be done right. His work ethic and drive to be a responsible, reliable, and compassionate nurse contribute to the outstanding work he does on a daily basis. We are indeed fortunate to have Willie Gutierrez in this role. His impact on the hospital and the lives he touches is immeasurable. For these reasons and many more, I believe Willie Gutierrez is the epitome of what the DAISY Award represents.
