Shay is an impressive nurse leader and embodies our Baptist Mission and Culture as a nurse.  We often talk about the expectations for our leaders and the patient experience.  Shay was a relief charge nurse on 7D one shift.  As I was rounding on patients, I found Shay completing leader rounding as well.  Shay not only agreed to relief charge on a unit that was not her home, but then went above and beyond to complete leader rounding on the patients of that unit.  I was so very impressed. Shay is so humble and continuously goes above and beyond the call of duty for her team and her patients.  She sets an example for others, not only in her home unit but for those to whom she floats to and leads.  She is a go-to on her home unit, and I often see her helping other nurses troubleshoot things and/or de-escalate patient situations. She is a leader and a mentor for her team.  This is servant leadership.  This is who we are at Baptist Health.  This is a nurse living out our mission.  I am honored to work alongside Shay.  She is so deserving of this special recognition.

First, let me start by saying I met Shay inadvertently when the ambulance driver was taking me to my room. I was transferred from Baptist North to Baptist South. The shift was ending and nurses were exiting the floor as we were entering. And a nurse said goodnight and welcome to our floor. Have a great night. The next morning during rounds, Shay introduced herself as my nurse for the day. And I remembered her voice. She was the most compassionate, caring person I've ever met. I was NPO the night before and was having surgery the next day. Shay knew I was starving and couldn't have anything after midnight. So she filled me up with what was allowed when my clear tray came. But Shay had made the tastiest broth ever. Even better than what was served from the kitchen. She took care of my every need, and it made me feel at peace and not worry about having surgery the next day. I wish I could've taken her home with me. She exceeded my expectations of a nurse, and she became family instantly.  Thank you, Shay D, for taking care of me.
