During the 8-week admission to the intensive program, she assesses the child every morning and consistently strives to promote a child and parent-friendly environment. The children love to see her every day. When medical problems arise, she is always prepared to provide the nursing care needed.
I have had the opportunity to work with Lynn since she started at KKI and have seen her develop and nurture the important role that she has on the feeding team. She is often the first provider to meet the families and educate them on what to expect from the team. Her caring and calming approach to what may be a scary event for a child and at times overwhelming situation to the parents is reassuring to them. During the 8-week admission to the intensive program, she assesses the child every morning and consistently strives to promote a child and parent-friendly environment. The children love to see her every day. When medical problems arise, she is always prepared to provide the nursing care needed. On multiple occasions, she is called on to educate parents on skills that they need to care for their child, including tube feed administration and G-tube changes. She has spent many hours patiently working with caretakers and giving them guidance on these tasks. Even removing or changing a G-tube becomes a fun and exciting experience for the child because of Lynn's ability to make the procedure age and child-appropriate. In urgent medical situations, she also excels, and I always appreciate her presence.

Lynn's organization and planning abilities keep the program intake process running well. Our clinic remains organized and efficient when she is present. When unforeseen problems arise, she quickly problem-solves with the providers and families. She is often called by medical staff in other programs to consult on G-tube problems and she always makes herself available to see the patients and work on resolve the issue. Medical providers throughout the Institute recognize her expertise and call on her routinely.

When I think of what attributes make a nurse excellent, I think of an individual who is caring, compassionate, knowledgeable, and an advocate for children and families. Lynn personifies these traits every day, and I highly recommend her for the DAISY Award.

Lynn is an amazing nurse who puts all patients first in our Feeding Disorders Program. A great example of her dedication to the well-being of our patients, I recall a patient we recently had where she assisted me in teaching a mother how to give a bolus feed by gravity. I am a registered dietitian and was trying to help one of our families with moving G-tube feeds around to promote more oral intake. Instead of running feeds overnight by a pump, I had recommended doing feeding during the day via gravity. Mother did not know how to do this. I reached out to Lynn and she gladly helped me provide the education for the mother. Lynn patiently walked mother through the steps of how to give a G-tube feed by gravity. She then told the mother that if she had the supplies with her, she could even help her give a feed by gravity. Noticing that the mother did not have all the correct supplies, Lynn acquired the correct syringes for the family. After providing the education and giving a feed with the mother, Lynn continued to check in with Mom throughout the rest of the admission on how bolus feeds via gravity were going.

Lynn Galyen is deserving of the DAISY Award as she manifests the character, values and compassion of an exceptional nurse. Lynn is always available when needed to help with any G-tube issues for outpatients in the Feeding Clinic and other clinics as well. She provides support and education to family members whose children have G-tubes and need someone to be compassionate in their interactions to help teach parents how to care for G-tube tubes. She is available to families when they call, email or are here in person. She is also available to other staff who need help trouble shooting tube feeding or G-tube issues. She is extremely knowledgeable in this area and always willing to teach other health professionals.

Below is just 1 example of a recent email I received from a family member about how Lynn helped her 80 year old father learn to change his 40 year old daughter with Rett Syndrome's new G-tube:

Email from a family member regarding the care Lynn provided:

Thanks for all of your help today!! I think you and Lynn helped to calm my dad about all of this. I know he will appreciate Lynn’s help at that time for the change of the button and a check in about her weight and nutrition needs.
Thanks again!

Lynn is a phenomenal provider and human being. She goes above and beyond with all of our feeding patients. She also manages a WIDE range of personalities on the team and handles this with grace and compassion.

Lynn is so amazingly helpful! She took time out of her own busy clinic to help me assess and treat 2 different gastrostomy tube issues for children in other clinics. She did not hesitate to help, and by doing so was able to put both families at ease. She also saved both families additional phone calls, appointments, and trips to medical offices by helping them while they were here. Lynn is incredibly knowledgeable, personifies the spirit of teamwork, and brings care and compassion to all that she does.

Lynn is dedicated to the patients and families we serve in clinic. She is always a smiling face and a calm voice when doing gtube changes and education. She will come see patients even outside of clinic time to assist with gtube site issues. She makes sure providers have what we need in clinic to be efficient. And will always facilitate reweighing a patient or getting a chair weight when weights are discrepant.

Every day, Lynn is compassionate and shows up to give 100% so that patients get the care they need. Her commitment to patient advocacy is evident in the work she puts in to make sure families have access to all the resources available to them while at KKI. Our patients are lucky to have her as a nurse and we are grateful to work with her!

Lynn is an Extraordinary Nurse! Every day, she goes above and beyond for our patients and their families. Most recently, Lynn took initiative and helped organize The Feeding Program ROAR for KIDS fundraiser. So far, the team has raised $2,127 to help the families that need additional financial support in our programs that are not covered by insurance (e.g. gas, food) during our 8-week intensive program. Not only is she helping these families, but she also helps the morale of our team! Lynn is truly a DAISY Nurse!
