He has successfully been the light that led two lost teams through much darkness. Corey is proof that great leaders can function anywhere and that sometimes, the best decisions we make are the hardest ones.
Leadership is about developing those around you to their highest potential, giving them support to succeed, but also giving them space to learn and grow. This is the type of leader Corey is. He is always happy to jump in and help but also places trust in those around him to do the right thing and forge their own path. He is very supportive and gives clear guidance and expectations but always gives the benefit of the doubt and wants to understand each person individually so he can best lead them. Corey loves to develop people. He can connect with anyone. He is great at building a connection and meeting people where they are. Everyone knows and loves him. He is never afraid to step outside his comfort zone to problem-solve or help someone in need. Corey lives his values and those of OhioHealth. It is rare to find him having a bad day. Everyone picks on him for always saying, “It’s fine, it’s fine, it’s always fine,” but people appreciate the optimism and feed off it. Healthcare is hard and sometimes you need someone to step in and say “it’ll be fine”. Corey is always willing and able to be that person. Corey came to our unit and stepped in to be a leader in a very hard situation. He came in to lead two units he knew nothing about. One had a new clinical manager and no educator, and the other had no clinical manager or educator. Although staff were initially skeptical of a med-surg leader in a critical care and intermediate space, his leadership shone bright, and soon, the staff were fully behind him. He has done nothing but advocate and care for the units and their staff. He has provided direction and undying optimism in some of the hardest times the units have seen. He has grown and developed two new clinical nurse managers and two clinical nurse educators while learning how to manage a critical care and intermediate space. He quickly formed relationships with a large multidisciplinary team, who saw his potential and lifted him up to lead the team. He has successfully been the light that led two lost teams through much darkness. Corey is proof that great leaders can function anywhere and that sometimes, the best decisions we make are the hardest ones. I do not think it was easy for Corey to come lead this space, but he saw a need and an opportunity to learn and grow, and he blindly took it. Corey is an example to everyone that you should set your own standards as a leader and live up to them every day.
