I want to nominate Sophie Riedel for a DAISY Award for her courage, compassion, and integrity in a very complex family situation. Sophie floated to a different unit than her own, and during her assessment, she had a gut feeling that something was wrong with the patient beyond just the admission reason. She made sure to sit with the patient and have an intimate conversation with them and found out that the patient was having a dangerous situation going on domestically that led to a hospital admission. Knowing this, Sophie made it a point to work interprofessionally with physicians, case management, and social work to ensure that the patient had everything they would need to be safe not only during their hospital stay but also to help coordinate a safe discharge plan to prevent future harm. Sophie managed to do all of this all while working with team members that she does not always work with. Sophie could have easily shaken off her unease as just an unfamiliar float, but instead, she took the extra time and effort to make sure to talk with the patient and make sure that the teams were updated appropriately to make the patient feel safe and honestly save the patient's life. Thank you for all your courage and compassion, Sophie! You're amazing!
