She knew exactly what to do and say. She stayed calm, soothed the patient's mom, and had her sit down in the chair. Mylaena got a cool wash cloth, kneeled down, and sat eye-to-eye with her. She held her hand and calmingly told her to breathe.
Harborview is a special place for me, a place that fosters a culture for providing world class care. The person I am nominating has gone above and beyond for her patients and coworkers, exemplifying world class care and that person is Mylaena Monks. I was a travel nurse, so I have met many people from different walks of life, but Mylaena Monks has stood out to me and is an extraordinary individual. She has an inviting attitude and has always stepped up to help her patients by advocating for them and remembering to listen to their needs.

I remember once, during the day shift, we worked together and my patient's mother came back from a family meeting. The realization of her son not being the same anymore and relying on the ventilator for the rest of his life, caused the mom to break down in tears and have a panic attack. Mylaena was walking around as usual, checking on her coworkers, and happened to be in that room. She knew exactly what to do and say. She stayed calm, soothed the patient's mom, and had her sit down in the chair. Mylaena got a cool wash cloth, kneeled down, and sat eye-to-eye with her. She held her hand and calmingly told her to breathe. She turned down the lights and stayed by her side until the patient's mom was completely calm and safe. Mylaena holds the character of a nurse, a mom, and a human being who understands that during hard times, one person is all that it takes to make a difference. And on that day, Mylaena truly changed this woman's life and brought her a moment of peace and happiness. Her calm demeanor and endearing attitude with this patient, including everyone she takes care of, make her one of the best nurses and people to have at Harborview.

Mylaena sometimes doesn't give herself enough credit, and she goes out of her way to help others without second guessing. I've worked with her on nights as well, and she is always willing to step up when patients are critically ill and are crashing in the TSICU. She never ran the Belmont before, but I stood side by side with her that night, and with both our efforts, we gave multiple blood products in order to keep a patient alive, and they later stabilized and got better. Running the Belmont was crucial in saving this person's life. Please consider Mylaena for this award; it would make my day, and I hope she realizes how good of a person she is.
