Brian spoke slowly, annunciated, listened to our dad’s stories, and showed him sincere warmth and kindness in a time when he truly needed it. These simple yet intentional interactions meant the world to us.
Our dad was taken to Swedish Cherry Hill after suffering a stroke. He has been deaf from birth and uses both sign language and lip reading to communicate, two things that can be tough to do after having a stroke. It was a very scary time for him and our family. He has been treated with kindness and exemplary care from every Swedish nurse, doctor, interpreter, and staff member while he has been there. However, one individual stood out to our dad and family as someone who went above and beyond to make sure our dad was well taken care of, could understand what was happening, and felt comfortable in a place that wasn't home. This person was Brian, one of our dad’s main nurses in the unit. One of the first things he asked was if there were simple signs he could do with our dad, or what way he could best communicate with him. He did not try to communicate through the family to our dad, he communicated directly with him, which made our dad feel seen. Brian spoke slowly, annunciated, listened to our dad’s stories, and showed him sincere warmth and kindness in a time when he truly needed it. These simple yet intentional interactions meant the world to us. Our dad has been treated with dignity, compassion, and the utmost care by Brian. His standard of care and bedside manner were top tier, and we sincerely appreciated it. We truly hope he wins this award; he deserves it.
