When she came into my grandmother's room to care for her, she made us feel like Grandma was the only patient that she was responsible for that day, even though we were well aware that she had many others to care for.
Lexi did not just exhibit the guiding principles of IU Hospital of dignity and respect, information sharing, participation, and collaboration; she exceeded them! Due to her age and advanced dementia, my grandmother was not just a "typical" patient. Despite her inability to understand and follow what may seem like simple requests, Lexi was incredibly patient and kind. She explained everything to her that she was doing and asked permission to take her blood pressure and even to adjust her pillows. If she ever got frustrated or overwhelmed, we never knew it because the gentleness, patience, and time spent just listening (often to my grandma's delusional ideas and conversations) were met only with a smile and genuine compassion. When she came into my grandmother's room to care for her, she made us feel like Grandma was the only patient that she was responsible for that day, even though we were well aware that she had many others to care for. At one particular point, my emotions about the new phase of life we were entering into with Grandma's care got the better of me, and no matter how hard I fought it, the tears started flowing. Lexi listened to my concerns and immediately messaged Grandma's doctors and a social worker to help propel us in the collaboration of all involved in her care. Lexi's compassion and care were exemplified towards me and our family despite us not being her patients. She did not have to go above and beyond, but she did. She did not have to listen to Grandma's conversations about her imaginary friends, but she did. She could have simply done only what her job required of her, but she displayed her passion for people and nursing by exceeding expectations and providing the "WOW." Thank you, Lexi!
