Elizabeth Rottach "Liz" displayed honorable integrity to ensure the safety of a patient during a harrowing situation. Nearing the end of a 12-hour nightshift, in the early hours of morning, a vulnerable patient became agitated and insisted on leaving the hospital. This patient dressed herself, exited her room and headed straight for the elevator. Liz and other Nurses attempted to verbally redirect the patient back to the safety of the hospital room, but these attempts were in vain. When the patient entered the elevator, Liz made a split-second decision to get on the elevator with the patient, not knowing where the patient may go. Liz remained calm, continuously trying to verbally redirect the patient. As the patient exited the elevator, her gait was unsteady so Liz locked arms with her in yet another attempt to keep her safe. The patient guided them out of the main entrance into the darkness of the parking lot. Liz was so calm during this that associates who passed them while on their way to work assumed everything was ok. The patient continued to walk out of the parking lot towards busy Hwy 14. At times the patient stepped onto the road and Liz would redirect her to the sidewalk. This adventure continued down Hwy 14 for over 15 minutes (0.7 miles) until they approached a gas station. At this time, Liz was able to convince the patient to allow her to use the patient's cell phone to contact the hospital staff, who were extremely concerned and frantically looking for both of them. Keep in mind, Liz has been unable to collect any personal communication devices prior to leaving the facility. The patient's daughter was beyond grateful for the compassionate and composed behavior Liz displayed, despite the risk to herself, to ensure the safety of her mother.
