Courtney Berry is an outstanding nurse who cares deeply about her patients and strives to provide safe outcomes every shift. We once cared for a patient (laboring mom) who had a high fever. As such, the baby was displaying tachycardia and distress on the fetal monitor. An urgent cesarean section had to be called. Once the baby was delivered, Courtney, along with Respiratory Therapy, quickly began Neonatal resuscitation efforts on the baby for 45 minutes. Courtney stood out to me as I observed her during this process by quickly and accurately performing an initial newborn assessment, obtaining repeated APGAR scores, documenting the resuscitation efforts, and communicating with the telehealth Neonatologist regarding the newborn's lung sounds and status. Courtney quickly noted that the baby's right lung had diminished lung sounds, prompting the Neonatologist to obtain appropriate diagnostic imaging and labs. Later, after the baby was stabilized and skin-to-skin with its mother, it was time for a shift change report. At this point, the baby no longer required continuous O2 monitoring. However, Courtney used her "gut instinct" to spot-check the infant and discovered that his O2 saturation was less than 80%. Courtney stayed with the patient and assisted the night shift team to again stabilize the baby and called the pediatrician long after her shift was over to ensure that the baby was properly transferred by ambulance to a higher acuity facility. She also verified that the baby and parents had matching baby bands on to ensure that the baby was kept safe and reunited with its parents at the new hospital. Again, this is one of Courtney's many attributes to the OB team at Providence Seaside. She truly exemplifies the hospital's mission of "remaining steadfast in serving all, especially those who are poor and vulnerable." I am a travel nurse and have worked in many different hospital settings, and I must say, I am amazed at her work ethic and caring spirit. It is an honor working with her and the OB team at PSH.
