Mitch advocating for more benefits for these two caregivers is only the latest example I have of Mitch leading with compassion and wearing his heart on his sleeve.
Recently, Mitch reached out to me concerned for two caregivers on East 3 who were both going through incredibly challenging trials in their personal lives. Each of these caregivers was going through circumstances that had recently exhausted their PTO due to needing to take time away to be with their children and their families to make sure they were safe and healthy. These caregivers had already used resources available to them through our leave partner but still needed more assistance. You could tell Mitch had a heavy heart; one of the things I love about Mitch is that he wears his heart on his sleeve, and his heart is always genuine. Mitch kept saying, “We have to do more to help them. Can’t we do more to help these incredible people?” Mitch gave me a quizzical look that meant he was thinking.
Next, Mitch asked about PTO donations and if we still did them. As a matter of fact, we do! Mitch’s next quest was to find out the current process for requesting PTO donations for caregivers in times of need. Once he secured the appropriate PTO share forms and permission from the caregivers to share a bit about their situations, PTO share forms were sent out to nursing leaders, asking their teams to consider helping. Multiple PTO share forms were turned in from all disciplines of the hospital gifting these caregiver’s time; time to heal their loved ones before returning to work to help heal their neighbors.
Mitch takes care of people better than any leader I know. Mitch cares for his caregivers like his own family. We hear phrases a lot in today’s culture like “work family”, “church family” etc. and in many instances, I bet those areas don’t really feel like family. If you work on East 3, however, and Mitch Young is your manager, I bet your “work family” is a pretty accurate term because Mitch cares for people like they are his family. Families aren’t always perfect, but they have each other’s backs when it counts and are there for each other in the best of times and in the worst of times. I believe Mitch exemplifies that promise in his leadership, caring for the East 3 team in the good and bad times.
